KUALA LUMPUR Malaysia was not invited to the Gaza peace summit in Egypt owing to its conditional support for US President Donald

Trump’s 20-point peace plan

, said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Datuk Seri Anwar said on Oct 14 that only countries which gave full support to the plan attended the summit.

“Malaysia was not included because we expressed support with reservations,” he said.

“It was conditional on a comprehensive resolution for the return of Palestinians who were forcibly removed,” he added.

Mr Anwar then said this includes rights related to Palestinian statehood and resolving continued violence in the West Bank.

He acknowledged that there were those who questioned Malaysia’s support for the plan.

But he said the main priority was to halt destruction in Gaza and the killing of civilians, including women and children.

Mr Anwar said the plan was also accepted by several Middle Eastern and Muslim nations.

He informed Parliament that he received a special letter from Hamas negotiators on Oct 7 supporting Mr Trump’s initiative.

For now, he said, Malaysia supports the plan as it would end the war and enable the return of Palestinians to Gaza.

Mr Anwar said Malaysia is ready to assist in peacekeeping operations under the United Nations if requested.

He said he will hold telephone talks with Egyptian authorities on Oct 14 to allow aid and medical help into Gaza via Rafah.

“We will see if we can send aid and medical specialists through Rafah,” he said.

“Instead of bringing Palestinians here, it is better that we go there to help,” he added.

Mr Anwar said he was informed that only 167 aid trucks managed to enter Gaza on Oct 13 although 600 were supposed to be allowed in daily. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
