At least one dead, 4 injured after overhead bridge collapses in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - A Vietnamese construction worker was killed while four other people were injured after a pedestrian bridge under construction collapsed near Mid Valley Megamall on Jalan Kampung Haji Abdullah Hukum.

A Bangladeshi worker who was trapped after the collapse has been rescued. The man, who suffered injuries to his legs, is being rushed to Universiti Malaya Medical Centre.

Brickfields OCPD Assistant Commissioner Shahrul Othman said rescue workers are still looking for another victim being trapped.

It was earlier reported that at least two people had been killed in the incident.

The collapsed bridge was 80 per cent completed.

"We are still investigating the cause of the incident," he said.

The Fire and Rescue Department's K9 unit has been deployed to assist in search and rescue operations.

City Fire and Rescue Department chief operations officer Samsol Maarif Saibani said the department was alerted about the incident at 3.33pm on Wednesday.
