Malaysia on Wednesday logged a record 39 Covid-19 deaths in a single day. Deaths from the disease have tripled in the first five months of 2021 compared with the whole of last year. The seven-day fatality average is regularly in double digits now, compared with a single-digit seven-day average for the whole of last year.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has said the new Malaysian lockdown was necessary as the country is on the verge of "crossing the red line" in terms of hospital ward and ICU take-up.
