BETONG, THAILAND - A tiny strip of grey in the deep green mountains came into view as our 86-seater turboprop plane burst through the clouds. It flew parallel to this runway below.

Then, just when it felt like we would cross from Thai to Malaysian airspace, the plane banked, making a complete U-turn before descending upon Thailand's newest airport.
