KUALA LUMPUR – The sales of electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) reached a total of 46,403 units in 2024, Malaysia’s Parliament was told.
Malaysia’s Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Liew Chin Tong said this was an increase compared with 35,723 units in 2023.
“The increase of EV sales, specifically BEVs, is backed by the development of charging facilities across the country,” said Mr Liew in Parliament on Aug 18.
Mr Liew also said that new car sales in Malaysia in 2024 recorded 816,747 units, surpassing the 800,000 mark for the first time.
“This places Malaysia in second place in Asean for the passenger vehicle market. This reflects the confidence of users and this strengthens the participation of local vendors,” he added.
Mr Liew was responding to Dr Siti Mastura Muhammad, who asked about the current automotive policy and the country’s strategies in boosting vehicle sales.
Mr Liew said the National Automotive Policy (NAP) 2020 is currently going through an in-depth mid-term review by the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry and the Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute.
“In this study, we take into account the current situation where new technology is used widely, such as EV and energy efficient vehicles,” he added.
Mr Liew said NAP 2020 is the latest policy that charts the direction of the national automotive industry.
“Its main goal is to make Malaysia a regional automotive hub that is based on technology and innovation.
“This review involves thorough engagement sessions with industry players, policymakers, and related agencies to ensure that this policy is in line with the current needs of the market and the development of the global technology,” he said. THE STAR/ ASIA NEWS NETWORK
