Residents here say the main sources of ammonia contamination are waste from poultry farms, discharge from oil-palm plantation mills and leachate from rubbish disposal sites.
The residents also point to indiscriminate dumping of pesticides and chemicals, and unregulated sand mining, which not only pollutes the rivers but also changes their paths and causes them to dry up.
