A motorcyclist was arrested by the Malaysian police for reckless driving, after a video of a large convoy of motorcycles riding against the flow of traffic went viral online.

The incident took place at 7pm on Aug 4, when the motorcyclists tried to flee from a police roadblock in Penang.

In the 37-second video posted on social media, the motorcyclists were seen in the first and third lanes of the Butterworth Outer Ring Road going against the flow of traffic, while cars and other vehicles were travelling in the middle lane.

The motorcyclists blared their horns as some swerved past oncoming cars.

North Seberang Perai police chief Anuar Abdul Rahman said the motorcyclists were deliberately riding in the opposite direction to evade a police operation set up to curb road hooliganism.

“They wanted to avoid being arrested by the police during the operation,” Mr Anuar said in a statement.

He said a motorcyclist was arrested during the operation under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for riding recklessly and dangerously.

Police also seized 25 motorcycles for various offences, Mr Anuar added.
