SINGAPORE – A mild earthquake with a magnitude of 3.2 struck Johor on the morning of Aug 27, with tremors felt in parts of the southern Malaysian state and southern Pahang.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said in a Facebook post that the earthquake was recorded 18km south of Segamat at 8.59am.
The epicentre was located at 2.33 deg north and 102.79 deg east, with a depth of 10km.
Segamat is about 180km from Singapore.
In a statement, MetMalaysia director-general Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said the earthquake, which happened on the Mersing Fault Zone, was an aftershock from earlier quakes that occurred on Aug 24.
“The public need not worry as this earthquake was of a weak magnitude,” he said.
He added that MetMalaysia will continue to monitor the situation and issue alerts from time to time.
The director of MetMalaysia’s National Weather and Earthquake Operations Centre, Ms Lucia Enggong, was quoted by news platform Media Digital Johor as saying the earthquake is not expected to have a major impact on public safety and infrastructure.
Johor’s Works, Transportation, Infrastructure and Communication Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh advised people to be cautious and to take note of instructions from the authorities.
He said in a Facebook post on Aug 27 that the state government will work with agencies such as the Malaysian Public Works Department, the Department of Irrigation and Drainage, and the state’s Water Regulatory Authority to monitor the condition of bridges, roads, dams and major facilities.
He added that oil and gas company Petronas will send a report on the condition of its assets and facilities within the area affected.
The Aug 27 earthquake comes three days after two mild ones were recorded in Johor
On Aug 24, the first earthquake, which measured 4.1 in magnitude, struck 5km west of Segamat at 6.13am.
