MANILA – Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr’s trust rating fell as a corruption scandal unfolded in September, showing how the probe he set in motion is hitting his popularity.

Mr Marcos’ trust ratings declined to +7 in September, from +18 in June, according to a Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey commissioned by Stratbase Consultancy. The poll covered 1,500 adults nationwide in late-September.

The President in July exposed corruption in flood-control projects, and congressional hearings in the past weeks revealed allegations of collusion among lawmakers, public works officials and contractors to divert billions of government funds meant for those projects.

The scandal has triggered protests, dimmed the economic outlook and sapped investor sentiment in the South-east Asian nation.

A separate survey from Pulse Asia Research also showed that more people have little to no trust that Mr Marcos can address the flood-control issue. The public is likewise unsure about the independent commission he formed to investigate graft.

The SWS survey in September also showed that Vice-President Sara Duterte’s trust ratings fell to +25 from +38 in June. Bloomberg
