JOHOR BAHRU - A 40-year-old man was shot and killed at a restaurant in Johor Bahru’s Taman Setia Indah on Jan 8.
Johor state police chief M. Kumar said the body had four gunshot wounds.
He added that it was an isolated incident, assuring the public that there were no wider security concerns.
The incident occurred at 12pm, said Johor Bahru South Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat.
A resident had alerted the authorities through the Malaysian Emergency Response Services 999 hotline.
“Preliminary investigations identified the victim as a 40-year-old male. The victim was pronounced dead by the medical team from Sultan Ismail Hospital,” AC Raub said on Jan 8. “The police are actively investigating to identify those involved, locate witnesses, and determine the exact cause.”
AC Raub said a video of the incident has gone viral on social media. He urged the public not to share the video on social media, as it could lead to speculation and misunderstandings.
“Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Johor Bahru South IPD hotline at 07-2182323 or approach the nearest police station.
“The Johor Bahru South District Police remain committed to conducting a thorough investigation and will provide updates once the inquiry is completed,” he said, adding that the case is being investigated as murder.
It is understood that the victim and his friends were having lunch in front of the restaurant on Jalan Setia 3/2, Taman Setia Indah at around 11.30am on Jan 8 before he was shot.
A video taken from a nearby shop’s CCTV footage shows a masked man with a jacket and a black full-face helmet, with a sling bag around his chest, walking towards the victim talking on his phone in front of a restaurant.
The clip, which was played without audio, recorded the suspect approaching the victim from behind before firing several shots at him.
The suspect was seen continuing to fire at the man even after the victim collapsed, before he fled the scene.
A workshop worker who asked not to be identified said he heard three consecutive explosive sounds and saw a motorcycle fleeing the scene.
“The next thing we saw was a man lying on the floor in front of the restaurant,” he said, adding that he initially thought people were playing with fireworks.
