Chickens and ducks in a Kedah village raised a ruckus on Aug 22 morning and alerted their owner to a reticulated python that was trying to eat them.

The man from Kampung Banggol in the northern Malaysian state immediately called the Fire and Rescue Department for help.

Officers from the department arrived and managed to capture the 5m-long, 40kg reptile before it ate any of the birds.

Baling Fire and Rescue Station chief Zulkhairi Mat Tanjil said the distress call came at 5.35am, and six officers were dispatched to the scene.

“When we arrived, the snake snuck out from the coop and tried to hide in a nearby telecommunications substation,” Malaysian daily Harian Metro quoted him as saying.

The officers took 35 minutes to capture the python using special equipment because it was acting aggressively.

The Wildlife and National Parks Department has taken charge of the snake.

Mr Zulkhairi told Malaysian newspaper the New Straits Times that 14 snake-related incidents have been recorded in the area since Aug 15, the majority of them involving king cobras, followed by pythons.
