A Malaysian woman was fined RM700 (S$210) on Sept 9 by a Malaysian court for allowing her 10-year-old son to drive her car.
The Seremban magistrate court found Hasyimah Parameswari Abdullah, 46, guilty under Section 39(5) of the Road Transport Act for allowing an underage person to drive.
She paid the fine, according to Malaysian media reports.
Magistrate Marlissa Mohd Fahmy pointed out the severity of the incident, which took place on the night of Sept 3 at a Seremban residential neighbourhood in the state of Negeri Sembilan.
Hasyimah’s son took her Toyota Corolla car for a joyride with his nine-year-old friend, and ended up causing an accident involving two other vehicles.
During the trial, Deputy Public Prosecutor M. Pusppa said Hasyimah had neglected her responsibility to monitor and supervise her son.
“This is not the first time such a case has happened in our country. This is very dangerous because the accused has allowed a child to drive a vehicle, with another child in it at the time of the incident,” Ms Pusppa was quoted as saying by Malay daily Kosmo!.
“The child’s actions has not only endanger himself, but others as well.”
Hasyimah, who was not represented by a lawyer, pleaded for a lighter sentence, saying that she works as a cleaner and is earning only RM1,500 a month.
She said her husband is sick and she has three school-going children to support, reported Malay daily Sinar Harian.
