KUALA LUMPUR - Family members of scammed victims detained in Thailand gathered outside the Thai embassy in Kuala Lumpur, urging the Thai government to help rescue their loved ones.
A letter appealing for assistance was handed to Mr Adittha Buakhamsri, the minister counsellor of the Thai embassy, during the gathering on the afternoon of Feb 12. The group of some 40 people claimed that Malaysians had been lured by crime syndicates offering fake jobs and were being held against their will.
Malaysian International Humanitarian Organisation secretary-general Hishamuddin Hashim, who helped organise the gathering, said the families were seeking help to rescue their loved ones.
“They (the victims) have been severely tortured, confined in dark rooms and not given food for days, surviving only on water. They are being forced to work like slaves,” he said.
Datuk Hishamuddin said the Thai authorities had previously rescued a Chinese actor from scam syndicates and urged them to assist Malaysians as well.
“We are here not to provoke, but to humbly plead to the Thai government for their assistance.”
