KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the government will set the price of RON95 petrol at RM1.99 (S$0.60) a litre for Malaysian citizens from Sept 30 onwards, Bernama reports.
Mr Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, says the move will benefit more than 16 million Malaysians and that all Malaysian citizens with a valid driving licence were eligible for the RON95 subsidy.
Those not eligible for the subsidy, such as foreigners, would have to purchase RON95 at the unsubsidised price, which is estimated to be around RM2.60 a litre.
“Police and Armed Forces personnel will enjoy the RM1.99 subsidised RON95 price from Sept 27, while Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) recipients will be eligible from Sept 28,” Bernama quoted Anwar as saying.
He added that the targeted RON95 subsidy will be enjoyed by all Malaysians, regardless of income level, as a gesture of appreciation to the rakyat.
Anwar also said that the government had set a monthly ceiling of 300l of subsidised RON95 for eligible individuals, but this would not apply to e-hailing drivers and riders who could apply for a higher ceiling.
Earlier, Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan was reported to have said that the targeted subsidy for RON95 petrol would be rolled out at the end of September.
Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali had also said the RON95 targeted subsidy would use multiple payment mechanisms and not depend solely on the physical MyKad.
“While eligibility will be tied to the MyKad, the actual purchase does not depend on just one payment method,” he told reporters on Sept 21. THE STAR/ ASIA NEWS NETWORK
