Leaving the office became a workout for people working in Malaysia’s The Exchange 106 on Oct 15, after a power outage meant that employees needed to go down hundreds of flights of stairs to evacuate.

In a video posted on Facebook, people can be seen walking down flights of stairs in the skyscraper, which is Malaysia’s fourth-tallest building. Some were equipped with torches.

The video, accompanied by dramatic music, has drawn more than 100 comments since it was posted in the afternoon, with some netizens joking that the incident turned out to be an unexpected “leg day workout” for some.

According to a list of the world’s tallest buildings compiled by the Council on Vertical Urbanism, a non-profit based in the US, The Exchange 106 is ranked 23rd, standing at 445m.

The building’s website states that its 106 floors make it a “a beacon visible for miles around, a symbol of a nation on the rise”.

Malaysian media reported that the Oct 15 power outage affected numerous areas across the Klang Valley and Johor Bahru that afternoon, and that The Exchange 106 was among several major buildings affected.

Others included popular malls like Mid Valley Megamall and Pavilion Damansara in Kuala Lumpur.

Power was restored fully at 5.54pm on Oct 15, national electricity company Tenaga Nasional Berhad said on Facebook. The outage was caused by a lighting strike at a power plant in Melaka, it added.
