KLIA aerotrain service set to resume in Jan 2025, says Malaysian transport minister

PETALING JAYA, Selangor – The aerotrain service at Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) is expected to be operational again by Jan 31, 2025, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
He said two aerotrain sets arrived in Malaysia last week and are entering the installation phase. They will enter the inspection phase after that.
“This phase will take about four months,” he said after he visited and viewed an aerotrain at KLIA Terminal 1 on Sept 2.
He said dynamic inspections will start in October. This means the aerotrains will be tested using the existing track.
“So I would like to explain to the passengers and the public that if they see an aerotrain operating, it is a test to ensure that everything runs smoothly,” he said.
Mr Loke also said airport operator Malaysia Airports Holdings (MAHB) needs to closely monitor all processes and tests and ensure they are carried out properly so that there are no further delays.
“Next year is an important year for the country because we will be the Asean chair, and we will have international meetings and of course we expect this aerotrain to be ready,” he said.
In total, Mr Loke said, MAHB will receive three aerotrain sets. Each set has three coaches and can accommodate up to 270 passengers.
“The third set will arrive in October and be used as a back-up train,” he said.
He explained that the shuttle bus service which previously replaced the aerotrain will continue as an option for passengers as there are large numbers of passengers who need to be moved.
On June 18, MAHB said the aerotrain replacement project at KLIA was slated to be completed by Jan 31, 2025.
This is three months ahead of the project’s original planned completion date of March 31.
MAHB said the expedited timeline was finalised through a contract signed in June between Malaysia Airports (Sepang), Alstom Transport Systems (Malaysia), and IJMC-Pestech JV, which is a joint venture between IJM Construction and Pestech Technology.
