PETALING JAYA Heavy continuous rainfall is expected to hit multiple states across Malaysia for three days straight starting on Jan 15, says the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

In a statement on Jan 12, the department said the heavy downpour is due to a monsoon surge that is expected to affect the country from Jan 15 to 18.

It said the intense rainfall was expected to impact several states in Peninsular Malaysia, areas in the south and west of Sarawak, as well as Sabah, during this period.

“Analysis of the latest weather forecast models indicates that a monsoon surge is expected to occur from Jan 15 to 18, which may lead to heavy and continuous rainfall in several areas across the country.

“The public is advised to refer to MetMalaysia’s website and its official social media channels, as well as download the myCuaca app for any latest and accurate information,” it said.

In an earlier statement on Jan 10, MetMalaysia had said danger-level continuous torrential rain was expected over some areas in Pahang and Johor.

The number of flood victims in Johor has surged, with more than 3,000 people affected as at Jan 12.

The Johor disaster management committee reported that the total number of flood victims in the state reached 3,449 as at 8am on Jan 12, up from 2,524 just 12 hours earlier.

“As of 8am, there are 3,449 people from 1,023 families seeking shelter at 36 flood relief centres statewide,” the committee stated.

Kota Tinggi recorded the highest number of flood victims, with 1,160 people from 368 families affected.

This was followed by Kulai with 748 evacuees, Johor Bahru with 605, Kluang with 506, and Pontian with 430. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
