Police in Thailand on June 24 arrested two suspects who are believed to have placed bombs at tourist hot spots around the resort island of Phuket, including its airport.
Malaysian news outlet Bernama, citing The Bangkok Post, said on June 27 that the police defused four explosive devices.
These consisted of a motorcycle that was packed with explosives and abandoned near the passenger terminal at Phuket International Airport; two explosive devices found in Patong Beach, located in the west of the island; and one more situated in Promthep Cape all the way in the south.
The two male suspects were reported to have given information on the explosive devices, and are said to come from the southern Thai province of Pattani.
Their motive, however, remains unclear.
Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has since put all government agencies on high alert, stressing the need for increased vigilance, while reassuring tourists that it was safe to travel.
Citing reports from different agencies, she said the incidents suggested an attempt to create unrest in the region.
