KUALA LUMPUR - The former girlfriend of controversial Malaysian sex blogger Alvin Tan has been jailed six months for uploading a Ramadan greeting on Facebook with a photograph of them having bak kut teh, a pork dish .

Judge Abdul Rashid Daud handed down the decision after the prosecution succeeded in proving the case against Vivian Lee May Ling, 27, The Star Online reported on Friday (May 27).

The sentence is to run from Friday but the judge granted the defence's application for the jail term to be reduced to five months and 22 days after considering the eight days Lee had been under remand, the report said.

He also granted a stay but increased bail from RM10,000 to RM20,000 (S$3,361 to S$6,722) pending an appeal.

Lee and Tan were charged in July 2013 under the Sedition Act for uploading the photo with a "halal" logo. The post sparked anger in Malaysia where critics slammed them for insulting Muslims .

Lee and Tan were also charged under the Film Censorship Act for pornographic photos on their blog. They had shot to fame in October 2012 after Tan posted sexually explicit photos of Lee and himself on his blog.

Tan, then an Asean scholarship holder studying law at National University of Singapore, lost his scholarship. Lee was reportedly working as a kindergarten teacher in 2013.

The couple broke up in 2014 and Tan is said to be in California and applying for asylum status in the United States.
