- The flood situation in Johor has shown signs of improvement, with the number of affected families and individuals decreasing as flood waters recede in some areas.

According to the Johor Disaster Management Committee, as at 2pm on March 23, the number of displaced families dropped from 1,988 to 1,652, while the total number of affected individuals decreased from 6,585 to 5,185.

The committee added that five districts remain affected – Johor Bahru, Pontian, Kota Tinggi, Kluang and Batu Pahat.

“The number of operational temporary relief centres has also declined from 44 to 32, with 12 centres closing as evacuees return home. No fatalities have been reported so far,” the committee said.

Among the hardest-hit areas, Johor Bahru has the highest number of displaced individuals, with 3,042 people taking shelter across 13 relief centres.

Other affected districts include Pontian (950 victims in nine relief centres), Kluang (760 victims in six), Batu Pahat (343 victims in two), and Kota Tinggi (90 victims in two).

The committee added that continuous monitoring was being conducted to assess additional needs for assistance and evacuation efforts.

“We are closely monitoring weather conditions and river water levels. Although no fatalities have been reported, the public is advised to remain vigilant and follow instructions from the authorities,” it said. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
