PENANG - A total of RM10,000 (S$3,100) was awarded as a gesture of condolence to the family of two tourists who were crushed to death after strong winds toppled a clump of ornamental bamboo and fig trees onto their car at the Pinang Peranakan Mansion in Church Street in Penang.
Tanjong MP Lim Hui Ying, through her service centre, gave RM5,000 for each victim to their family on Sept 28.
The victims, identified as Chinese nationals – Mr Liu Zhu, 59, and his daughter Liu Xinxin, 36 – lost their lives in the incident on Sept 18.
Mr Liu’s son, Mr Yu Hui, and Ms Liu’s husband, Mr Wang Geng Feng, were in Penang to manage the victims’ affairs following the incident.
Ms Lim, who was out of the country on official duties at the time, arranged for Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng to represent her in handing over the contribution and extending her condolences.
She assured the families that her service centre was ready to provide further support should they require assistance during this difficult time.
In the wake of the tragedy, Ms Lim also contacted the Penang Island City Council, urging it to continuously monitor the safety of trees in the Tanjong area and emphasising the need for more stringent preventive measures to avoid such incidents in the future.
