ESM Goh on visit to Myanmar's Naypyitaw: MFA

SINGAPORE - Emeritus Senior Minister (ESM) Goh Chok Tong is on a visit to the city of Naypyitaw in Myanmar, during which he is expected to call on Myanmar's President U Htin Kyaw, and meet with State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said in a statement on Tuesday (March 14).

Mr Goh is visiting Naypyitaw from Tuesday to Thursday (March 16).

The visit will also see him meeting with Myanmar's Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.

In addition, he will also meet with Patron of the Union Solidarity and Development Party and former President, U Thein Sein; Chairman of the Union Parliament's Assessment of Legal Affairs and Special Issues Commission and former Union Parliament Speaker, Thura U Shwe Mann; and former Union Minister in the President's Office, U Soe Thane.

ESM Goh will witness with President U Htin Kyaw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the Singapore-Myanmar Vocational Training Institute (SMVTI), which will see the gradual hand-over of the SMVTI to Myanmar over the next three years, the MFA said. "This is part of Singapore's skills and knowledge transfer to support Myanmar's long term development," the MFA added.

Mr Goh will be accompanied by Members of Parliament Zaqy Mohamad and Joan Pereira, and officials from the Prime Minister's Office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
