A children’s football game turned into a scene straight out of a horror film when they discovered a headless corpse floating in a canal in Thailand, according to local media.

The Thai police were alerted to the grisly discovery in the canal in Samut Sakhon, a city 48km from Bangkok, on the evening of Jan 28, Thai media outlet Thaiger reported.

The children were playing near a construction site for a river bank protection dam when the ball landed on a bank near the canal.

When they retrieved the ball, they noticed something floating nearby and poked it with a stick.

Upon realising it was a corpse, the children alerted adults in the area, who called the police for help.

According to local media, the corpse was missing its arms and head.

It was so heavily decomposed that the authorities could not tell the gender of the person.

After the corpse was brought ashore, it was taken to the Siriraj Hospital’s forensic institute for an autopsy.

The city’s residents reportedly told the police that no one from the community had gone missing from their homes in two months.
