By-elections announced for assembly seat of late PAS leader Nik Aziz

PUTRAJAYA - Malaysia's Election Commission has set March 22 as the polling date for by-elections to the Chempaka assembly seat, which fell vacant following the death of PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat.

The commission chairman Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof announced that nomination day would fall on March 10 while early voting would take place on March 18, the New Straits Times reported.

"The electoral roll consists of 21,890 registered voters of which 20,390 are normal voters, 1,497 early voters and 3 absentee or overseas voters," he said.

Nik Aziz, former Kelantan Menteri Besar and leader of Islamist Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS), died last week after a prolonged illness.
