KUALA LUMPUR - A multi-vehicle crash on Sept 27 which killed a one-year-old boy and injured eight others at the Bukit Kajang Toll Plaza is believed to have been caused by a brake failure on a lorry.
The lorry driver, who was heading from Semenyih towards Putrajaya, reportedly lost control of his vehicle because of the faulty brakes and ploughed into three vehicles waiting at the toll lanes.
Kajang police chief Naazron Abdul Yusof said the boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
He added that the other injured victims were rushed to Kajang Hospital, Serdang Hospital and a private hospital for treatment.
“The 42-year-old local lorry driver has been arrested and will be remanded to assist with investigations,” he said in a statement.
When contacted, Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abdul Yusof said: “The driver said he jumped out from the lorry.”
He also said the driver claimed the lorry was experiencing brake issues, adding that the vehicle would be sent for a full inspection.
He added that checks showed the lorry was last serviced in April.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless or dangerous driving resulting in death.
“Motorists must exercise caution, drive responsibly and obey traffic laws at all times for the safety of all road users.
“Besides the lorry, three other vehicles were involved in the accident: a four-wheel drive, a car and a sport utility vehicle,” said the police chief. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
