Batam immigration officer removed for alleged extortion involving tourists from S’pore

There have been reports that Batam's immigration authorities are extorting up to $250 from ASEAN passport holders in exchange for entry into Batam.

The Batam Immigration Office has taken measures to prevent non-authorised people from entering immigration areas.

- The Riau Islands regional office of the Immigration Directorate General acknowledged that there are indications of extortion of money from foreign tourists at the Batam Centre ferry terminal.

Regional office head Ujo Sujoto referred to a report by Singapore media platform Mothership on March 25 on the experiences of two separate groups of tourists arriving in Batam on March 13 and 14.
