KLUANG - The Malaysian police have arrested 10 people who were suspected to be involved in scamming Singaporean victims tens of thousands of ringgit.
According to the police, the suspected scammers would impersonate the victims and reach out to their friends on social media, asking for financial help.
The suspects were caught when the police raided three apartments in Iskandar Puteri a few days ago, said the police. At least six of the suspects, in their 20s and 40s, had past criminal records.
It is not clear when the arrests took place.
An official said the amount transferred was less than RM1,000 (S$300) each time, but many could have fallen prey to the syndicate.
Investigations showed that the syndicate had been operating the call centres at the apartments for several months before officers from the Commercial Crime Investigation Department raided the premises.
“Each suspect was paid a basic salary of more than RM2,000 with commission whenever they successfully dupe a victim,” the official said, adding that some documents and mobile phones were also seized from the suspects. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
