In economic powerhouse Guangdong, some cities struggle to perform

As China’s 31 provinces, municipalities and regions began their annual parliamentary sessions in earnest this week, something unusual happened at the Guangdong meeting.

Unlike the leaders of other major economic centres such as Beijing, Shanghai and Zhejiang – who all declared that their turfs had grown 5 per cent or more in 2024 – Guangdong governor Wang Weizhong was conspicuously mum about how the southern province had done.
