MANILA – Eleven mourners were killed when the pick-up truck taking them home from a funeral was involved in a collision with a bus in the northern Philippines, the police said on July 11.
The accident happened shortly after midnight at an intersection in Abulug municipality in Cagayan province, AFP reported.
The Toyota Hilux with 14 passengers reached an intersection with a major highway, and the pick-up truck and the bus collided. There were no fatalities on the passenger bus, but the bus driver and conductor were seriously injured, and 23 others suffered minor injuries, the police said.
Only three people in the pick-up truck survived, police major Antonio Palattao told AFP.
“The driver of the Toyota Hilux is not well-oriented with the area and was not aware they were already approaching a highway,” police captain Jun-jun Torio told AFP.
“Naturally, you slow down when approaching one.”
The Philippines is notorious for its lax regulation on public transportation and poorly maintained roads. In December, 17 people were killed when a bus plunged into a ravine in the central province of Antique. REUTERS, AFP
