- A Japanese doctor based in the United States was arrested on March 4 upon his extradition for allegedly defacing a shrine near Tokyo in 2015 by splashing parts of it with an oily liquid, police said.

Masahide Kanayama, 63, an obstetrician and gynaecologist, is accused of leaving oily smears at Katori Shrine in Katori, Chiba Prefecture, around 5pm on March 25, 2015.

Kanayama, founder of a Christian religious group, according to his appeal against his extradition at the US Supreme Court, was arrested on board a plane to Japan from the United States.

He has admitted to the charges, according to the police.
