TOKYO – A 30-year-old South Korean man was arrested on Sept 2 on suspicion of killing his girlfriend by slashing her throat in Tokyo’s Setagaya ward the previous day.
Ms Bang Ji Won, a 40-year-old South Korean woman, died after she was found with her throat slashed on the afternoon of Sept 1, an investigative source said.
The police received an emergency call from a bystander at around 1.35pm local time that day reporting that a woman covered in blood had collapsed on a street and a man had fled the scene. She was taken to hospital unconscious and later pronounced dead.
The suspect, Park Yongjun, was detained at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport on the afternoon of Sept 1 in connection with the killing of Ms Bang. He has so far refused to answer questions.
Park and Ms Bang were in a relationship, but she had consulted the police in Tokyo on Aug 29, saying she was beaten after telling him she wanted to break up.
Officers advised her to stay at a home of an acquaintance and told Park – who had arrived in Tokyo earlier in August – to stay away from her.
The suspect was spotted near her home on Aug 30, prompting the police to warn him against trying to contact her. The police escorted Park, who had a plane ticket to South Korea, to Haneda Airport, but were unable to keep track of his whereabouts.
The incident took place in a residential neighbourhood about 500m north-east of Komazawa University station on the Tokyu Den-en-toshi line. KYODO
