Although below-zero temperatures are not expected in Seoul, the capital will likely see the lowest temperatures so far this fall.

The drop in temperatures has been attributed to a high-pressure system expanding towards the West Sea, bringing in cold, northerly winds into the Korean Peninsula.

SEOUL – South Korea can expect a brief spell of cold weather starting from Nov 10, before temperatures return to levels similar to previous years, the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) said on Nov 9.

The KMA attributed the drop in temperatures to a high-pressure system expanding towards the West Sea, bringing in cold, northerly winds into the Korean Peninsula.

Compared with morning temperatures on Nov 9, morning temperatures on Nov 10 are projected to be 4 deg C to 8 deg C lower, with average nationwide low temperatures expected to range from 0 deg C to 6 deg C.

The cold conditions on Nov 10 are expected to continue through Nov 11, with average nationwide lows forecast to reach below zero at minus 2 deg C. Nationwide highs are expected to sit between 13 deg C and 18 deg C.

In Seoul, morning lows on Nov 10 could reach as low as 2 deg C, and as low as 3 deg C on Nov 11.

Strong winds are forecast for Nov 10 and Nov 11, possibly driving apparent temperatures lower than actual temperatures. Coastal and mountainous regions may observe wind speeds of between 15 and 20 metres per second.

The cold temperatures will likely subside starting on the afternoon of Nov 11, with temperatures on Nov 12 projected to be similar or higher than average temperatures from previous years.

Average nationwide lows are expected to range between minus 1 deg C and 10 deg C that day, while average highs are expected to range from 10 deg C to 18 deg C.

Though subject to change, the KMA said a heavy rain and high seas watch may be issued for southern regions, including Jeju Island, on Nov 13, depending on how a low-pressure system near the island develops throughout the week. THE KOREA HERALD/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
