On a sweltering summer day at Seoul’s Dongmyo Flea Market, people were queueing up not for the popular 1,000 won (S$1) South Korean street toast that sells for triple the price elsewhere, but for paper cups of iced milk coffee going for the same price.

The chilled beverage – made from an instant mix of coffee, creamer and sugar – is ladled out from a large tub and sold alongside Korean traditional drinks such as roasted grain latte, or misugaru, and rice punch known as sikhye.
