A man was arrested for allegedly snatching people’s glasses off their faces while riding a moped in Tokyo.
Around 50 pairs of glasses were found at the 49-year-old suspect’s house in Shinjuku, local police said on Dec 2.
They added that he is being investigated for his possible involvement in other similar crimes.
The increasing popularity of such vehicles has been linked to a growing number of accidents and traffic offences committed in the country, reported Japanese news outlet The Mainichi.
The man, whose occupation is unknown, has been accused of stealing a pair glasses worth 3,000 yen (S$27).
He had allegedly approached a man in his 20s from behind on a road at around 9.15pm on Sept 2, the police said.
To get the victim to stop, the suspect asked him for directions to the nearest station before stealing his glasses.
The victim later reported the crime to the authorities.
The suspect’s arrest was made in connection with another snatch-and-grab incident involving a moped rider, the police said.
The suspect has refused to comment on the case, the Mainichi report said.
