SEOUL – After a six-week stand-off with striking doctors, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol was widely expected to make a concession to them in a live televised address to the nation on April 1.

Instead, he stood firm on a proposed addition of 2,000 places to annual medical school admissions as “the bare minimum”, despite saying he was open to counter-proposals from the doctors.
