Purchasing manager Vivian Liu, 28, first turned to a therapist online in May 2022, after she had been stuck in her Shanghai studio apartment for nearly two months.

With no certainty over when the Covid-19 forced isolation would lift, she was feeling increasingly anxious and helpless, worried that her food would run out.
