Beijing's move to directly enforce a national security law in Hong Kong has fanned fears of further unrest as the city's leader vowed to roll it out soon, eliciting rallying cries online to protest against the move, viewed by some as an effective upending of the "one country, two systems" principle.
Chief Executive Carrie Lam vowed yesterday in Beijing to "complete the legislation as soon as possible", adding that it would not affect the legitimate rights and freedoms enjoyed by residents under the law, or the judiciary's independence.
