A woman in China accidentally bit on a firecracker, which then exploded in her mouth, reported various Chinese media outlets.

The woman, who is known only as Ms Wu, said her brother had brought some snacks back to their home in Sichuan.

Ms Wu was watching television in the living room with no lights on when she tried to reach for some candy, but picked up a firecracker instead, reported ET Today.

Firecrackers are usually used to celebrate auspicious occasions, including Chinese New Year.

She thought she had picked up taro milk candy, which she used to eat as a child, and the firecracker exploded when she bit into it.

It was not reported when this accident happened.

“While I didn’t feel any pain at the first instance, I could taste the gunpowder in my mouth,” she said.

The explosion caused numbness in Ms Wu’s mouth, but she could still eat and brush her teeth, reported ET Today.

Ms Wu reportedly said that the packaging of the firecrackers was misleading, with some Chinese netizens agreeing that it can be mistaken for that of candies.

One of them said: “I would have thought this was a candy and eaten it too.”
