Hong Kong records highest temperature of the year at 34.8 deg C

HONG KONG - Hong Kong recorded its highest temperature so far in 2024 on the afternoon of July 7 as a subtropical ridge brought fine and extremely hot weather to the city, according to the Hong Kong Observatory.
The observatory said temperatures reached 34 deg C at its office in Tsim Sha Tsui, while the mercury rose to about 35 deg C in many areas across the city.
“The maximum temperature recorded at the observatory was 34.8 deg C, the highest so far this year,” it said in an advisory.
Tai Po in the New Territories recorded 34.4 deg C at 1pm, while Lau Fau Shan saw 34.5 deg C at 2pm. On Hong Kong Island, Wong Chuk Hang recorded 32.8 deg C at noon and 3pm, said the observatory. It issued a weather warning on July 7 morning and reminded the public to take precautions against heat stroke.
The observatory said the subtropical ridge will weaken slightly in the next couple of days, but it will remain very hot over the coast of southern China, with temperatures in the city expected to range from 29 deg C to 34 deg C on July 8.
A southerly airstream will bring a few showers and thunderstorms to the coastal areas of Guangdong from the middle of the week. The mercury is set to range from 28 deg C to 33 deg C from July 8 to July 13 before going up again to 29 deg C to 34 deg C on July 14, the observatory added. CHINA DAILY/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
