Three children and a man died, after the electric vehicle they were travelling in crashed into a traffic barrier and burst into flames in Taoyuan in north-western Taiwan on Jan 25.
The Taoyuan Fire Department was alerted to the accident – which involved a car ferrying two adults and six children – that occurred along the National Freeway 1 in the evening of Jan 25, reported media outlet Central News Agency.
Firefighters put out the fire and found the driver dead, said the department, adding that seven passengers were taken to the hospital.
The driver was identified as a 40-year-old father, who was in the vehicle with his wife, their three children, and three of their relatives’ children to visit family for the Lunar New Year that officially starts on Jan 29.
Two boys and a girl, aged between two years old and 10, died the next day following injuries, said the fire department.
The driver’s wife is reportedly in a coma, while an eight-year-old boy has been intubated and will be undergoing surgery. A girl, 11, has been treated for second-degree burns, while another, four, is reportedly fully conscious.
According to media reports, the family was travelling in a Hyundai Ioniq 5, which has seating capacity of five people.
