TOKYO - Two Philippine nationals were rescued on Oct 12 on Mt Okuhotakadake, straddling Nagano and Gifu prefectures in the Northern Japan Alps, but one later died, Japanese police said.

According to the police, the two men, aged 53 and 48, were part of a seven-person group that climbed the 3,190m peak, which shares the title of Japan’s third tallest. They became stranded while descending.

Police launched a search on the evening of Oct 11 after receiving an emergency call from a staff member of a mountain lodge near the summit, who said a Philippine woman had reported three members of her group missing.

The three were eventually found about 170m away from the lodge around 5.20am local time on Oct 12.

The 53-year-old man, who was in a serious condition, was later confirmed dead, while the 48-year-old man is believed to be suffering from hypothermia.

The third person, a woman, descended on her own, the police said. KYODO NEWS
