SEOUL – A two-year-old dog in South Korea was abandoned once more when his new owner returned him to the shelter just hours after adopting him, with his fur shaved from the neck down.
The abandoned dog – named Kuno – had been at an animal shelter in Gangneung town, east of the capital Seoul, until he was adopted on July 19.
His new owner, however, brought him back just seven hours later, telling the shelter: “We cannot raise him with the other dogs.”
What was odd, however, was that Kuno’s fur had been shaved off on every part of his body except for his head during his brief time with his new family.
The shelter posted photos of Kuno before and after he was shaved.
“It’s discouraging for us to see him left again to be honest. We are unsure of how to show his charm (to potential adopters) again,” the shelter said in a post on its website.
“Kuno still likes people. We wish for him to meet his real family before he is disheartened. Please give him a chance, but only if you are ready to stay with him and be responsible for him for his entire life, not just swayed by a momentary emotion,” the shelter said.
Over 100,000 pets are abandoned across South Korea each year, although the number has declined since reaching 135,791 in 2019.
According to the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency, 106,824 abandoned pets were admitted to shelters in Korea in 2024. THE KOREA HERALD/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
