BEIJING – Since the Chinese authorities quietly mooted a proposal for a national internet identification system, there has been fierce backlash from lawyers and academics about the potential for further social control.
Even as China’s Ministry of Public Security and Cyberspace Administration are still seeking public comments until Aug 25 on a draft law that proposes the system, a pilot involving more than 70 platforms is already under way.
