BEIJING - The sudden deaths of two workers at ByteDance and Bilibili last month have once again cast the spotlight on China's punishing overtime culture, especially in its highly competitive tech sector.

Despite the government warning companies last year that the "996" practice - working from 9am to 9pm, six days a week - was illegal, employees in the tech sector told The Straits Times that the overtime culture is still very much alive.
