BEIJING – Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said promoting healthy, stable and sustainable China-US relations is an important task in a phone call with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
Mr Blinken also discussed his recent trip to the Middle East and US diplomatic efforts in the region with Mr Wang, according to a statement from the US Department of State.
In the call, the two top diplomats exchanged views on the Israel-Hamas conflict and agreed to maintain communication on the situation in the Middle East, according to a Chinese Foreign Ministry statement on Dec 6.
Mr Wang said during the conversation that the top priority at the moment is to cease fire and cease fighting “as soon as possible”.
Mr Blinken also thanked Mr Wang for going to the US Embassy in China to express his condolences over the death of former US secretary of state Henry Kissinger, said the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
Dr Kissinger, the most powerful US diplomat of the Cold War era, who helped Washington open up to China, died on Nov 29
“Dr Kissinger has always advocated that China and the United States should respect each other, evolve together and fulfil their international responsibilities,” Mr Wang was quoted as saying in the phone call.
Mr Wang repeatedly stressed that the US should fully understand the importance of the Taiwan issue to China. He also discussed the value of Dr Kissinger’s diplomatic legacy being carried forward and developed by future generations.
Mr Wang and Mr Blinken further emphasised the importance of building upon progress made on key issues at the summit between the two countries’ presidents in California in November, according to statements from their respective departments. REUTERS
