SEOUL – Cold, winter-like temperatures accompanied by strong winds were forecast for the central and southern parts of South Korea from Oct 27, signalling the start of late autumn and early winter conditions across the country.
Cold northerly winds are expected to flow into South Korea from Oct 27, significantly lowering overall temperatures, as a high-pressure system currently situated over the north-west expands across the Korean peninsula, according to the state weather agency.
On Oct 27, nationwide low temperatures are expected to range between minus 7 deg C and 11 deg C, while highs are forecast to range between 9 deg C and 17 deg C, the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) projected.
Because of strong winds, apparent temperatures are expected to be significantly lower than actual temperatures.
The weather agency stated that a cold wave advisory would be issued from 9pm on Oct 26 in some parts of Gyeonggi, Gangwon, North Chungcheong and North Gyeongsang provinces, the first cold wave advisory to be issued this autumn.
In South Korea, cold wave advisories are issued when morning low temperatures are expected to drop more than 10 deg C from the previous day, making actual temperatures reach 3 deg C or lower, or are expected to be 3 deg C below the seasonal average.
In Pyeongchang, a mountainous region of Gangwon province, morning temperatures falling as low as minus 1 deg C are expected on Oct 27, with apparent temperatures dipping as low as minus 7 deg C.
Yeoncheon in Gyeonggi province and Jincheon in North Chungcheong province can also expect to see apparent temperatures as low as minus 2 deg C, while Mungyeong in North Gyeongsang province can expect to see morning apparent temperatures reach minus 1 deg C.
After cold air consistently flows into the country throughout Oct 27, the KMA stated, the coldest temperatures of the week would be observed on Oct 28, with Pyeongchang predicted to see apparent temperatures as low as minus 11 deg C.
Though below-zero temperatures are not likely to be observed in Seoul, the capital city can expect to see its lowest temperatures so far this autumn on Oct 27 and 28, with morning lows expected to range between 2 deg C and 4 deg C.
According to the KMA, such unseasonably cold temperatures are expected to last until Oct 29 before bouncing back to average temperatures on Oct 30. THE KOREA HERALD/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
