SEOUL – Another sign of road subsidence was found on Aug 30 morning near the area where a sinkhole in western Seoul had occurred the previous day
The Seoul Metropolitan Government’s road division and police have been controlling traffic on two lanes since 8.30am on Aug 30 in Seongsan-ro, a road which runs from Yonsei University to Sacheon Bridge, about 30m from the spot where the accident occurred.
“We are working with experts to determine the cause,” said a district official, adding that the authorities monitored the road overnight and discovered the subsidence while patrolling in the morning.
On Aug 29 at about 11.25am, a vehicle carrying a driver and a passenger rolled over sideways as it crashed into a sinkhole 6m wide, 4m long and 2.5m deep in Seongsan-ro in Yeonhui neighbourhood, Seodaemun district, north-western Seoul.
The driver of the vehicle, a man in his 80s, was seriously injured and taken to hospital. A woman in her 70s who was a passenger in the car had cardiac arrest. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was performed on her and she was taken to hospital, where she is now reportedly conscious.
The sinkhole caused severe traffic congestion. Further investigation is under way to determine its exact cause. THE KOREA HERALD/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
