Four days before the Taiwanese went to the polls to elect their president for the seventh time, incumbent Ms Tsai Ing-wen unleashed a political advertisement on steroids. In a nearly three-minute campaign video, the two worlds of Hong Kong and Taiwan were displayed on split screens, to great effect.

A male narrator intones: "This is our daily life. Our son playing computer games. Our daughter waging virtual battles in an Internet cafe and taking the last train home.
