A three-year-old girl died after she, her six-year-old sister and their 66-year-old grandfather were struck by a tram in Hong Kong’s western district on Aug 15.

The trio and a foreign domestic helper were hit at about 10.45am while crossing a road outside Kennedy Town Swimming Pool, Hong Kong Free Press reported.

The toddler and her grandfather were trapped underneath the vehicle and had to be freed by emergency personnel, according to Hong Kong media.

Photos on Facebook show at least 14 firefighters and three fire trucks at the scene.

The toddler suffered multiple injuries and was unconscious when first responders arrived. The man had multiple injuries and the older girl was bleeding from her head, but both were conscious.

The trio and their helper were whisked to the hospital, where the younger girl was pronounced dead.

The police did not say whether the helper had been hit by the tram, but added that she had complained of pain in her waist, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported.

As at 4pm, the survivors were in a stable condition, it added.

Hong Kong Tramways has since offered its condolences and suspended the tram’s driver, who is assisting with the police investigation into the accident, according to SCMP.

The firm said the driver had “no bad records of driving” during his four years and nine months with the company, adding that the incident occurred during his third trip of the day.
