SYDNEY Late last year, a stint of record-setting rain across south-east Australia left rivers overflowing and caused devastating flooding and mass evacuations. Yet an unusual silver lining emerged from the floods.

In the Gayini Wetlands, a remote floodplain about 800km south-west of Sydney in the state of New South Wales, the deluge led to the sudden creation of a vast inland sea.
